Not All Heroes Wear Capes
Stop by any cafeteria to watch school nutrition professionals prepare healthy meals for students-all the while adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile- and you'll see they are true heroes.
This is the reason we celebrate School Lunch Hero Day every year on the first Friday in May. This annual observance is a chance to showcase what a difference school nutrition professionals make in the lives of every child who comes through the cafeteria.
This week the Fredericksburg Area Museum visited Second grade classrooms and talk to students about the Powhatan People. The students were super excited about the prestation. Special thanks to the #FredericksburgAreaMuseum
First grade students have been eagerly counting down the last days of school! Teachers assigned a letter for the last 26 days of school and have led students in fun, engaging, and educational activities each day! This week, to celebrate "K" day, first grade students took their force and motion unit outside! Students got to experiment with pushes and pulls, and how the wind can supply us with energy while using kites! A big shout out to our first-grade team AND parents who are supplying students with these engaging educational opportunities! Ms. Bland's 1st grade class

Hugh Mercer's Technovation Virginia team has truly showcased their dedication and innovation through their participation in the Regional Invent Virginia/DC Expo and subsequent qualification for the Virginia State Competition. Under the guidance of coaches Lauryn Myers and Jessica Kujala, these students have not only honed their technical skills but also tackled important issues such as mental health, river cleanliness, and pet health.
The team’s inventions, ranging from the My Best Friend Robot to Aqua Turtle aka Ciggy to Trashcan 2.0 and Bike Belt, demonstrate their commitment to addressing real-world challenges with creative solutions. It's impressive to see how they've leveraged technology, including AI, to develop prototypes that aim to make a positive impact on their communities.
Afton Koza and Hazel Lam-Mackintosh invented My Best Friend Robot. “My Best Friend Robot is a robot that provides words of encouragement and kindness,” said co-inventor Afton Koza. “We decided to make it because sometimes people are sad and need a friend. Our invention makes you happier,” said co-creator Hazel.
Lily Scully and Lucy Clark designed and created Aqua Turtle aka Ciggy after learning about the number one river polluter during one of the weekly Technovation after school meetings. Guest Rebecca Rubin informed the inventors that cigarette filters do not decompose and stay at the bottom of the river forever. After hearing this, the girls designed a river turtle that uses AI technology to identify and collect cigarette filters from the riverbed.
By empowering young female students to engage with technology and innovation, the Technovation program at Hugh Mercer is fostering a new generation of leaders and problem-solvers.
Team Member Whitley Weiss enjoyed designing Bike Belt because it allowed her to address an issue she deals with each day. “Riding a bike with a dress can be dangerous. The bike belt allows me to dress the way I want and not be afraid of getting it stuck in the gears or chain.”
As they await the judges' scores at the State Competition, it's clear that these students have already achieved significant success. Regardless of the outcome, their journey exemplifies the power of curiosity, collaboration, and perseverance in driving meaningful change. It's exciting to see what they will create next.
