James Monroe Mural Unveiling Fredericksburg City Public Schools September 10, 2024 The Jayem community celebrated “Habitat”, Fredericksburg City Public Schools’ latest and fourth mural contribution by local artists Sophia Pineda and Gabriel Pons on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The ribbon cutting ceremony was emceed by JMHS Principal Marcus Petty and featured performances by the JMHS drumline, Monroe Singers, and marching band. JM Ambassadors assisted Opening remarks were provided by School Board member Malvina Rollins Kay, who shared with guests that in the spring of 2023 Pineda and Pons worked together in his studio, creating sketches of the different elements they envisioned for the mural: the blue heron, various fish, and the river otter. Onsite painting began in the sweltering heat of late July. “Habitat” was made possible by the initiative of James Monroe teachers Casey Willging, David Lovegrove, Megan Waite, Lueden "Ms. S" Sheikhnureldin — with the Pineda family and Cary Street Partners. Volunteers were Vickey Barrera, Gillian Hoback, Dante Jenkins, and Megan Shaughnessy. Sherwin Williams donated all paint supplies. Ms. Kay said, “We all come to the table with special gifts and it’s how we choose to use and share those gifts that’s important.” Pons shared with the audience that when he was beginning the mural work, he thought back to something one of his first design professors said: “Suspend disbelief.” Referencing the scale of the mural, Pons said he and Sophia had to “suspend disbelief in the sense that it can’t be done, that it’s too long, too tall, too high, too hot — and at one point too dark and too cold.” Together they expressed gratitude for all those involved in bringing the mural to fruition. He further urged everyone in attendance to suspend their disbelief when they take on projects that matter to them. Mr. Andre Pineda, Sophia’s father, addressed the gathering by echoing Pons' sentiments, urging everyone to consider the power of supporting and encouraging differently abled students, which can lead to unbelievably beautiful outcomes. Last week, Mr. Mason's math class took their education outdoors, embracing the perks of alternative learning! Learning doesn’t always have to happen within four walls. Fresh air, hands-on experiences, and a boost in creativity—these are just a few perks of alternative learning. We are loving this dynamic approach! #AlternativeLearning #OutdoorEducation #EngagedLearners #HealthyMinds #InnovativeTeaching

Mrs. Brindley, Ms. Morrison, and Mr. Hine tested water quality with their students last week to unearth the cause of a mysterious (but imaginary) fish kill in the Rappahannock River. They are learning how to keep our river clean and safe for recreation and drinking water! This is the first part of our Meaningful Watershed Education Unit, which will end with a field trip to the Rappahannock River for the day! #MWEU #RappahannockRiver #water #ScienceClass

Last Wednesday, August 28, Fredericksburg City Public Schools held the 9th Superintendent Community Roundtable, and it was all about career and technical education (CTE) and building strong connections with our community and local businesses. Participants got a firsthand look at the exciting CTE programs from current JM students and then jumped into a lively discussion on how FCPS can keep making these opportunities even better for our students. #CTE #Community #StudentSuccess # JM

Last week, Mr. Blosser’s classes celebrated the ancient Roman festival of Vulcanalia. In a tradition that dates back centuries, Romans would throw fish into a fire to appease Vulcan, the god of fire, hoping to release their fears. In a modern twist, Mr. Blosser asked his students to write down their fears, doubts, and worries for the upcoming year on paper fish. These were then "sacrificed" to the flames, with Mr. Blosser himself, dressed as a Roman priest, leading the ceremony to symbolically release their fears. What’s most striking is the depth of the students' concerns: "Not passing high school" "Not getting good grades" "My performance in math" "Not doing well in math and getting a cold, just as bad" "Not doing well on Bauer tests" "Not passing Chemistry" "Not passing history" "I am afraid I won't get rid of toxic relationships so I can do my best in school" These heartfelt fears show they are thinking deeply about their futures. Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend filled with positivity and the courage to face their fears! #Vulcanalia #MrBlosserClass #StudentVoices #OvercomingFears #Inspiration #TeachingWithHeart #HighSchoolLife
